We have developed many techniques for machining close-toleranced, thin-walled plastic parts. One example is a thin-walled part machined from 20% glass-filled Ultem. Many of the features in the finished part have flatness and perpendicularity requirements of .001 or less. To achieve this, the part is rough machined, stress relieved, and then filled with a molding compound to stabilize the part and support thin-walled features. This allows the part to be finish machined, maintaining critical dimensions.
